If you have decided to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner, you probably have questions about cost, questions that are difficult to find the answers to on program websites. These programs are typically known as Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) programs, which is also the name of the credential they prepare you for.

This page ranks accredited, predominantly online PMHNP programs on cost alone, not on quality or prestige; for other specialties, see our nurse practitioner affordability guide. We reviewed 28 programs and ranked 14. Every tuition figure comes from the exact program page and is labeled as published or calculated and was accessed in October 2026.

Programs are grouped by entry route: BSN to MSN, RN to MSN, or a post-master’s certificate, which is built for nurse practitioners who are adding a secondary specialty and is the cheapest route on the page.

Quick Facts

  • Programs reviewed: 28 across three entry routes; 14 ranked
  • Cheapest certificate: $12,430 calculated (Stony Brook, online out-of-state rate); lowest published total: $14,025 (Arkansas State). Its practicum is limited to states where it’s authorized.
  • Cheapest BSN-to-MSN: $21,865.36 calculated (USI, non-resident online rate)
  • Credit range: 22 to 47.5 semester credits (Purdue Global: 48 to 78 quarter credits)
  • Accreditors represented: CCNE and ACEN
  • Figures checked: October 2026

What “Affordable” Means Here

Our rankings consider the total tuition from each program’s own pages in October 2026. If a school publishes a total, we use it and label it “published.” When a program provides only a rate and a credit count, we multiply those two numbers and label the result as “calculated.”

There are three routes because a BSN-entry master’s, an RN-entry bridge, and a post-master’s certificate are different programs. Keeping them separate is the clearest way to compare value.

Every ranking uses the rate that a non-resident would pay, because most readers of a national page are not state residents. Schools typically price online students one of three ways: a flat rate, an online rate, or separate resident and non-resident rates.

For resident and non-resident rates, we rank programs on the non-resident rate but provide the resident figure in the entry. As you will see, the swing can be large. One example is Texas A&M International University’s certificate, which is $10,643 for Texas residents and $29,870 for everyone else.

If a program doesn’t have a sourceable tuition rate or credit count, we don’t rank it. These programs appear under “Programs Reviewed but Not Ranked,” with the reason.

Totals do not cover all costs. Most totals leave out fees, books, background checks, immunizations, travel for campus intensives, and the certification exam, which the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) prices at $395 for non-members as of October 2026.

It might be tempting to just go with the least expensive program, but three things can make a cheap program the wrong choice. State authorization is important because a program that you cannot enroll in is not an option at any price. Clinical placement is second: psychiatric preceptors can be hard to find, and a program that expects you to find your own can cost you time. The curriculum is third. If a program does not provide the psychotherapy training required by the ANCC, its graduates are ineligible to sit for the exam.

Published tuition rates can (and often do) change. Use this page to build a shortlist on cost, then confirm authorization, placement, and curriculum with each program before you apply.

Cheapest BSN-to-MSN Psych NP Programs

These programs are for RNs with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) seeking a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a PMHNP focus. We ranked seven in all. Other programs may be cheaper but admit only residents or cost far more for out-of-state students. You can find them below, under “Programs Reviewed but Not Ranked.”

Cheapest RN-to-MSN Psych NP Programs

These programs are for associate- or diploma-prepared RNs. A bridge option combines BSN-level and graduate coursework in a single program; our RN-to-MSN guide explains how bridge programs work and what you should check before enrolling.

PMHNP bridges are rare. Of the candidates reviewed, only one publishes a total cost.

Wilkes University offers a PMHNP concentration. At $786 per credit for all students, its published maximum tuition amount is $41,658, excluding fees, as of October 2026. The MSN program at Wilkes is 42 credits, but this does not include any bridge courses.

Spring Arbor University’s RN-to-PMHNP bridge is 82 credits with 500 clinical hours and one four-day residency. Cost is $499 to $810 per credit, depending on the course, which makes it impossible to calculate a total cost.

Chamberlain University’s RN-BSN to MSN Option includes a PMHNP specialization, but clear costs for the bridge portion of the program are not provided.

Cheapest Post-Master’s PMHNP Certificate Programs

Certificate programs are for nurse practitioners with another specialty and other graduate-prepared nurses who wish to add a psychiatric-mental health focus. They cost less than a second master’s degree because many applicants may already have completed the core APRN courses, typically advanced pathophysiology, health assessment, and pharmacology.

Programs Reviewed but Not Ranked

We reviewed these programs on their own sites in October 2026 and left them out of the ranking for the reason given.

  • East Carolina University MSN: Not currently considering out-of-state applications.
  • Texas Woman’s University MSN: Limited to Texas residents.
  • Texas State University MSN and certificate: Approved to operate only in Texas as of 2025, so it cannot enroll students from other states. Published totals are $20,080 for the MSN and $10,040 for the certificate, as of October 2026.
  • Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center MSN: Out-of-state distance rate not confirmable on the school’s own pages; also excludes eight states.
  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas MSN: Non-resident distance rate of $910 per credit is above this page’s range; out-of-state enrollment is limited to five states.
  • University of Nevada, Reno MSN and certificate: Nursing differential fee not published, so no total can be calculated.
  • University of Saint Mary MSN and certificate: MSN is $41,605 calculated, above this page’s range; the certificate’s own accreditation is not stated (the school states CCNE accreditation for its master’s program only).
  • Chamberlain University MSN: $35,720 in tuition plus a $7,200 APRN fee, above this page’s range.
  • Chamberlain RN-BSN to MSN and Spring Arbor RN to PMHNP: No PMHNP bridge total published.
  • University of South Alabama RN to MSN: Serves RNs with a non-nursing bachelor’s, not associate-prepared RNs.

What PMHNP Certification Requires

A general NP program does not meet the requirements for a PMHNP certification. The standard credential is ANCC’s PMHNP-BC (Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified), which covers patients across the lifespan. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB) also offers an exam, but we are focusing on ANCC’s rules.

As of October 2026, ANCC’s eligibility rules require:

  • A PMHNP master’s, postgraduate certificate, or Doctor of Nursing Practice from a program accredited by CCNE, ACEN, or the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA)
  • At least 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours within the PMHNP program
  • Three separate graduate APRN core courses in advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, and advanced pharmacology
  • Clinical training in at least two psychotherapeutic treatment modalities

Certificate applicants need to make sure that the certificate itself is accredited as a postgraduate APRN program, as the MSN accreditation does not carry over.

Clinical hours and psychotherapy training are built into the curriculum and cannot be added after graduation. A program that skips either is not a bargain.

Purdue Global, Wilkes, and Old Dominion describe psychotherapy training for individuals, groups, and families on their public pages. Those descriptions do not say which psychotherapeutic treatment modalities are covered. Confirm with each school that its clinical training meets ANCC’s two-modality requirement before you apply. .

Remember that certification is not licensure. After passing the exam, you will have to apply for APRN licensure through your state board of nursing. Our psychiatric nurse practitioner guide covers the full path.

Paying for It

To pay for their PMHNP, most students combine federal aid, employer support, and, when qualified, a federal service-obligation program. Psychiatric-mental health is better served by these federal programs than most nursing specialties; behavioral health is a federal shortage priority.

Federal student aid. Eligible graduate nursing students may qualify for federal direct unsubsidized loans by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through the Federal Student Aid Office. Federal borrowing limits changed on July 1, 2026, and Graduate PLUS Loans are generally unavailable to new borrowers, with limited exceptions for students who were already enrolled. Under current federal guidance issued after a court order, eligible MSN and DNP programs are temporarily treated as professional degrees for federal loan limits. Confirm your program’s current borrowing limits with its financial aid office.

Federal service-obligation programs. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) runs the Nurse Corps Scholarship and Loan Repayment programs, and the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) repays loans for eligible behavioral health clinicians. Both require a period of paid service at an approved facility in a shortage area.

Employer tuition assistance. Hospital systems commonly offer tuition assistance, and it can be the largest single cost reduction available. Tuition assistance usually requires a commitment to stay on as an employee, so read the repayment terms before you enroll.

Institutional grants and discounts. Military rates are the most concrete: as of October 2026, Austin Peay charges uniformed military personnel using Tuition Assistance. $250 per graduate credit, and Purdue Global lists graduate tuition reductions of 17 to 30 percent per credit for current service members and 14 percent for veterans.

The certification exam. American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) members pay ANCC $220 for the exam, $175 below the non-member fee, as of October 2026. APNA’s regular membership costs $145 a year, a net saving of $30; its $35 student rate is for full-time students only.

FAQs

Why do two PMHNP certificate programs at the same school cost different amounts?

Certificate length depends on what degree you already have and what courses you’ve already taken. An NP with the three APRN core courses will need fewer credits than a nurse with a non-APRN master’s. For example, at Arkansas State, that’s the difference between 27.5 credits for $14,025 and 36.5 credits for $18,615, as of October 2026. Ask every school which version applies to you.

If I take a post-master’s certificate, does the certificate itself need to be accredited?

Yes. ANCC accepts only postgraduate certificate APRN program accreditation for certificate applicants, so look up the certificate itself in the CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA directory rather than relying on the school’s general statement.

Can I sit for the certification exam before I graduate?

Yes. ANCC can authorize you to test once coursework and faculty-supervised clinical hours are complete, with your Validation of Education form and transcripts on file. Certifications are issued when ANCC receives your official transcript. Testing early can mean starting work as a PMHNP sooner after graduation.

Will I pay in-state tuition for an online program if I live somewhere else?

It depends on the program’s rate pattern. For example, South Alabama charges $609 per credit regardless of residency; Austin Peay charges out-of-state online students $800, against $533 for residents; and Texas A&M International charges certificate students $367 in Texas and $1,030 elsewhere.

How much does the ANCC certification exam cost, and can I reduce it?

As of October 2026, ANCC charges $395 for non-members, $295 for American Nurses Association members, and $220 for APNA members, each of which includes a $140 non-refundable administrative fee. You must claim a discount within five business days of ANCC receiving your application.

Do I have to pay to find my own clinical placement?

Sometimes, and it is rarely included in the tuition figure. Programs handle placement one of three ways: the program arranges sites, a coordinator helps you find them, or you arrange them yourself. Students in student-arranged programs sometimes pay outside placement services, so ask each program what happens if a placement falls through.

Does an ACEN-accredited program count for less than a CCNE one?

No. ANCC accepts CCNE, ACEN, and NLN CNEA equally. Some of the most affordable programs on this page, including Arkansas State and Austin Peay, are ACEN-accredited.

Next Steps

Once you have a shortlist, the following three checks can help you decide whether each program is a good fit.

Confirm your state is authorized

A program that you cannot enroll in is not an option, no matter what the price. Check each program’s authorization page for your state, and check again if you plan to move while in school. Then confirm the program’s accreditation yourself in the CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA directory. For certificates, look up the certificate itself.

Confirm who finds your clinical placement

Psychiatric preceptors can be difficult to find. Finding your own preceptor can take time, so a student-arranged program that costs $3,000 less can ultimately cost you a semester of nurse practitioner income. Ask what happens if a placement falls through mid-term. Also ask whether the program has existing agreements with psychiatric sites in your area.

Confirm the curriculum covers two psychotherapy modalities

Ask each program to name, in writing, the two psychotherapy modalities its clinical training covers. This information can be difficult to find on many program pages. ANCC requires clinical training in at least two areas, as explained in the section ‘What PMHNP Certification Requires’ above.

Conclusion

The cheapest program on paper is not automatically the right one for you. The right choice depends on your entry route, whether the program can enroll you, how it handles clinical placement, and whether its curriculum delivers what certification requires. Build your shortlist on cost, then confirm the details. Make sure your state is authorized, find out who finds your placements, and make sure the curriculum delivers the clinical hours and psychotherapy training ANCC requires. Contact each program with those questions before you apply.
